How do I change my username or avatar?

I want to update both my username and my profile picture. I found where to change my avatar but the username field looks read-only when I click on it. Is there a way to change it, or does it require a moderator action?

Avatar: you can change this yourself in your profile settings under the photo icon. Username: this requires moderator action due to potential impact on mentions and links. Send me a direct message with your current username and the new one you want and I can make the change. Give me 24 hours.
