Question

When should you double-wrap a burrito and when is it overkill?

I have been seeing double-wrapped burritos at a few places lately — one tortilla inside, one outside — and I cannot tell if it is a structural improvement or just a way to add bulk. My instinct says a properly sealed single wrap should be enough for most situations. When does double-wrapping actually make sense and when is it unnecessary?

Double-wrap has two legitimate use cases: very wet fills that would make a single tortilla soggy before the customer eats it, and very long transport where the outer tortilla acts as insulation and moisture barrier. For immediate service with a proper seal and a reasonable fill, single wrap is always enough and actually produces a better eating experience because the ratio of tortilla to filling is correct.

From a structural standpoint double-wrap is mostly a volume-service hedge. At home with careful technique there is never a reason for it.
