Question

What is the right total fill weight for a standard 12-inch burrito?

I keep getting blowouts and I suspect I am overfilling but I do not have a good reference point. Most recipes just say things like 'a cup of beans and some rice' which is not useful for understanding the actual weight. Is there a generally accepted fill weight range for a standard 12-inch flour tortilla? And does the weight limit change with tortilla brand or thickness?

220 to 280 grams is the sweet spot for a standard 12-inch flour tortilla. Over 300 grams is where blowouts start becoming frequent. I have tracked 200 burritos over three months and the 300g threshold holds consistently. Scale your fills — a kitchen scale is the single best investment for burrito consistency.

The limit also drops with cheaper tortillas. A premium or homemade tortilla can handle 280-300g. A store-brand thinner tortilla starts failing around 240g. The tortilla brand is as much a variable as the fill weight.
