Question

Is there a correct ratio of rice to protein to beans?

Every burrito I make feels like a guessing game with ratios. Sometimes I end up with too much rice and the protein is lost. Sometimes the beans overwhelm everything else. I am looking for a baseline ratio to start from that I can then adjust by preference. Is there an agreed-upon starting point, or does it completely depend on the style you are going for?

1:1:0.5 by weight — rice to protein to beans — is a good starting ratio for a balanced burrito. It keeps the protein as the dominant element, uses the rice as a base, and uses the beans as a seasoning and texture element rather than a main component. From there: if you want protein-forward go 0.5:1.5:0.5; if you want a bean-focused burrito flip the protein and bean ratio.

Or skip the rice entirely. Beans and protein only, with a good broth from the beans doing the work of the rice. It is a different burrito but it is a legitimate one and arguably more traditional than the rice-heavy California style.
